Search for Non-Nucleon Degrees of Freedom and Spin Effects
in Few-Nucleon Systems

Scientific Programme:
Study of charge-exchange processes in dp interactions. Study of polarization characteristics of different reactions with polarized and nonpolarized deuterons and nucleons in inclusive, exclusive and correlation experiments (PPM, BES, SINGLET, DELTA-SIGMA). Study of the structure of light ²D, ³He and ⁴He nuclei at small distances and search for manifestations of non-nucleonic and quark degrees of freedom. Study of highly excited nuclear matter and collectivity effects in nuclear medium; delta and other nucleonic resonance excitations on protons and nuclei. Study of spin-spin correlations in pp elastic scattering. Modernization of the polarized proton target to study polarization characteristics of NN and dN interactions. Detector development for relativistic nuclei and polarization experiments at the Nuclotron (SINGLET, DELTA-SIGMA), PSI, CEBAF (Hall A), COSY.
First measurements of complete set of the np spin observables at 0 ^o -

_L (np),

_T (np), A_00kk (np), A_00nn(np) and R_dp (the total np cross section differences and spin-correlation parameters), using longitudinal (L) and transverse (T) polarized and unpolarized targets as well as quasimonochromatic relativistic 1-6 GeV neutron beams. Data on energy dependences of these observables allow to determine the forward scattering NN amplitudes, for the first time over this energy region. Comparison of the obtained data with QCD motivated calculations.

Expected main results in 2005:

Data taking with the STRELA set-up at the extracted Nuclotron beam.
Tests of the spectrometer subsystem with the deuteron beam and a polarized target equivalent.
Mounting and commissioning of the 2-arm hodoscopic spectrometer with the transversally polarized target; start of data taking.
Data taking with the DELTA-SIGMA set-up using the polarized and unpolarized neutron beams at the Nuclotron. Analysis of accumulated during the runs statistics.
Development of theoretical methods to calculate deuteron nuclei fragmentation taking into account relativistic and FSI effects.
Measurement of polarization transfer from d to p in the reaction ¹²C (, )X at internal momenta 0.6-0.8 GeV/c.
Measurement of the analyzing power in pC, pCH₂ and pCH₄ scattering.
