Investigation of Secondary Particle Production and Neutron Yield from Heavy Targets in Nucleus-Nucleus Interactions. Studies of the Transmutation of Radioactive Wastes from Nuclear Power Installations

Scientific Programme:
The aim of the project is experimental study of energy and space distribution of secondary particles produced in extended metal targets (GAMMA-2 facility) as well as investigation of residual nuclei formation in thin targets of transuranic isotopes in nuclear interactions using the LHE Nuclotron proton beams with energies 1-5 GeV. Estimation of transmutation cross-sections of long-lived radioactive isotopes.

Expected main results in 2005:

Completion of data analysis for precise determination of ( ¹³⁹La(n, ) ¹⁴⁰La), ( ¹²⁹I(n, ) ¹³⁰I), and ( ²³⁷Np(n, ) ²³⁸Np) reaction rates at the energies 0.53, 0.65, 1.0, 2.0, 3.7 and 4.15 GeV from the data of the 2002-2004 experiments and comparison with model calculations.
Analysis of the threshold detector spectra and neutron spectra unfolding on the surface of the moderator from the experiments conducted in the 2002-2004.
Irradiation of the ²³²Th thin targets at the Nuclotron proton beam, measurement and analysis of the resulting -spectra. The purpose of these irradiations is to study the mechanism of excited nucleus fragmentation. It represents fundamental interest for theoretical model development and verification. The choice of the thorium is caused by a possibility of its use as fuel in electro-nuclear power installations.
Irradiation of the modified lead target (40 cm in length) to achieve the full primary proton beam absorption, measurements of the induced activity in the samples, analysis of the data.
