The LHC Transverse Damping System

Scientific Programme:
Within the framework of the LHC project, a transverse damping system (TDS) is being created. The system is intended for suppressing of transverse instabilities of a beam in accelerator and damping of particles injection errors that allow obtaining of required intensity and density of the beam in the Large Hadron Collider. The "LHC Damper" project is being implemented at LPP of JINR in strong cooperation with CERN. Results of researches and developments obtained within framework of the project for transverse damping system and powerful wideband electronics are supposed for usage at basic facilities of JINR and in accelerators of other countries.

Expected main results of R&D studies:

Creation of the Transverse Damping System at LHC, optimization of regimesof the systems for obtaining of high luminosity of a beam at LHC.
Researches on beam dynamics in synchrotrons. Recommendations on application of transverse damping systems in synchrotrons (nuclotron, ets.).
Application of modern powerful wideband electronics in accelerators with purpose of increasing of theirs efficiency.

Expected main results in 2005:

Tests of kickers of TDS at JINR and CERN, manufacture of kickers set, manufacture of amplifiers set and theirs testing.
Investigation of transverse dynamic of a beam for nonlinear damping of particles injection errors in synchrotron. R&D studies for usage of TDS in nuclotron at JINR and in SIS100 & SIS300 at GSI.
Overall tests of an ion beam scanner on cyclotron RIA-72 and RIA-60 at FLNR of JINR. Manufacture of a high-voltage stabilization system for modulators and power suppliers of magnetic lens at LIU-3000 electron linac at LPP of JINR (in accordance with contract).
